Janathon-Lite: Day 5

Saturday is parkrun day. This is the law.
Even if I'm ill, and people are generally saying 'stay in bed'
Ah yes, I think, but then who will open the gates? In holiday time options are limited, and basically it's parkrun with me, or no parkrun at Riddlesdown this week.

So, another early morning - eating breakfast first, cos of the medications, and setting off in the dark. It's cold,  it's damp, it's not raining though. Met at the gates by Ange, who doesn't let me get out of the car, I spend my parkrun sat in the chair in charge of registration, and then go off to the pub to socialise and generally chill out a bit.

Janathon-Lite 05: Got up
Was smiley, alert person for 3hrs.

Janathon-Lite Day 4

Today I went on an expedition. I had to leave my warm and germ filled bed after a limited amount of sleep, get dressed, eat something and then get in my car an remain awake enough to drive to the Docs.

Things I discovered at the Doctors' Surgery: As predicted, I have sinusitis. My sinuses are in fact so swollen that their path can be clearly seen in my face as little ridges.
I also have a chest infection. My temperature was 40+. My blood pressure is 'dangerously high'. My resting heart rate is currently 120bpm - see, told you I was exercising whilst sitting still. Cardio-a-gogo. And the final discovery - bonus points all round if you can guess it... I have Shingles. Yay!
Apparently, the itchy spots I thought were flea bites (although I was a little mistified when combing the cats showed them both to be flea free) are Shingles. And I am, it seems at the end of week four of the diseaseness - which means that I was having the first two weeks during carol concert and school show rehearsal week. Which explains quite a lot. Spent over £40 on prescriptions.

Felt properly sorry for myself, and spent the rest of the day on the sofa, then sorted out parkrun kit before an early night.

Janathon Lite - 04:  Got up early. Got Dressed. Drove car.
Existed with pulse rate over 100 bmp all day

Janathon-Lite: Day 3

Today was a continuation of yesterday - the battle of the immune system and the lurgy continued. I also had a visitor - the lovely Ange - coming round in the afternoon, so an additional activity had to occur, as the carpet was somewhat crunchy. I had to resort to working in stages, as standing up for more than 5 minutes was very difficult. Interval hoovering!

Janathon-Lite 03: Battling illness
Hoovering entire flat - in 5 minute intervals.

Would be nice to feel better soon.

Janathon-Lite Day 2

As I appear to be right at Death's door, and the brightness of the screen is hurting my eyes, this is going to be short. There was no miracle cure/recovery. My throat is so swollen that eating is hideous. A day of little/no movement - well, between bad and sofa hardly counts - I've not been outside, so no cycling or walking has occurred, but I still reckon I get to say I did day 2!

 Janathon-Lite, Day 2:
Today my immune system went into battle with a nasty evil lurgy. The fact that I'm still alive is proof that it's still trying, the fact that I'm not better offers testimony to the severity of the battle.
If anyone wants to argue about whether this is exercise, I would like to point out that judging by my absolute exhaustion levels, it certainly is. So there.

Janathon - lite: Day 1

I should probably start by explaining that this isn't a full blown Janathon attempt - in fact it isn't an officially registered attempt at all. The reason for this is because I've tried twice before to do this, and failed utterly. So this year I thought I'd try it on the qt, and take the pressure off.

So, the 1st of January 2013:

parkrun day. Not standard Saturday parkrun, but special Event parkrun. 9am, and an  11am freedom run. Obviously, if I had run one or both of them, this would be a really short post, but my knees don't do running, at least not at my current weight, so no.

What I did do today was organise and RD two events. This involved leaving home at 7.10, in the dark. It also involved putting on soggy wet boots, which I really should've taken out of the car at some point after the Christmas Day event. The cold wet feet were entirely eclipsed by the camaraderie and warmth generated by the volunteer team, and the runners, all 58 of them, at 9am. Run done, most people vanished, and the hard core core - Dylan, Jen, Ken, Paula, Steven & me - set about getting the 11am freedom run ready. Results were processed at the registration desk in record time. parkrun branding was removed from everything - tape at start and finish replaced with a red & white version, barcode tokens replaced with handwritten numbers. Signs which had been inadvertently collected were put out again, attempts were made to get a cup of tea, or indeed anything warm. The cold wet feet had ceased to exist in the realm of feeling. Event 2 happened, very low key, small numbers - wet muddy course, not counting in the great t-shirt haul, who knows - but 16 did it, 4 did all 3 event (Banstead in the middle). We packed away, went to the pub, and published more times, before having a celebratory meal.

Throughout all of this, it became evident to me, and probably to everyone else, that I was not well. My voice, not great since pre-show illness, has almost vanished. My throat is red hot to touch, and  swollen. I have a nasty, chesty cough, that leaves me feeling sick & dizzy every time it happens. I'm so, so tired. Every muscle and every joint aches. Getting through the event(s) was a given. Enthusiasm from others, and sheer necessity made it so. But when I found myself dreading the walk to the start line, and doubting whether I'd get back to the finish line in time, alarm bells started to ring.

Home, at 4pm, shivering like mad, although temperature in my flat is tropical. Sleeping bag and hot water bottle on the sofa, tv on, slept for 4 hours. Woke up, sweating like mad. Forced toast and peanut butter into myself and went to bed.

Really hope I haven't got flu. And really sick of feeling ill.

Anyway, what of Janathon-Lite?

I carried many heavy bags to and from the car.
I walked 700m to and from the start line 4 times. 2,800m.
I cheered a lot!

So endeth the first day. Tomorrow will not be cardio, unless a miracle cure happens in the night!

Still here ... maybe!

Hello!

It has occurred to me that I am not very good at this blogging lark.
It has also struck me that I should either 'use it or lose it'
Basically if this is going to sit here without any new content I might as well delete it and the thought of that makes me sad.

So I'm going to give it until Christmas - and try to blog regularly during that time. We shall see.

Meanwhile - Happy Thursday!

Wednesday, 1 February 2012

Hello February

Well, it's good to be back.
Having done nearly two months of daily blogging, I ran out of steam just before Christmas, and that, as they say, was that.

For the record, Christmas was fairly hard work, and a wee bit depressing. The bright spot, as ever, was parkrun (quite a lot of parkrun) and the fact that it's over now. (Christmas, not parkrun!)

January sucked a bit as well - again, it almost always does - the month when getting out of bed is a major achievement... a little bit of an iron deficiency didn't help, weirdly, having a needle stuck in my backside every other day, does! (Iron injections rock!) It's taken a while, and I'm still anemic, but I've been trying to get to bed before midnight, and to eat actual food that isn't chocolate, and it seems as if I may have survived!

Jen and I saw January out in style - with day 1 of a 'couch to 5k' program. It wasn't difficult, but it was cold, and muddy, on the Downs.

In an attempt to do penance for my Janathon fail, I am going to do a low key 'febathon' - I don't promise daily blogging, but am intending to do some daily exercise, which I will report in the blog when posting.

Today, I left the house at 6.50 (argh!) expecting to have to de-ice the ka, however, temperatures had obviously come up, as all was clear - so to school, and to the gym...
28 mins of cardio followed - may possibly have accidentally reset the cross-trainer timer - on the bike and the elliptical trainer, and so far, I feel pretty good, as it goes... Tomorrow evening will be day 2 of the C25k, and friday will be back to the gym...

So far, I'm liking February.
